    Early childhood portfolios as a tool for enhancing learning during the transition to school

    From 2005-2008 Mangere Bridge Kindergarten in New Zealand carried out a Centre of Innovation research project exploring the transition between early childhood education and school. A flexible action research approach was used, with the three teacher researchers, supported by two university research associates, developing and researching a range of strategies for supporting children’s learning as the children and their families ‘crossed the border’ from early childhood education to school. Many of these initiatives involved working closely with teachers in the local school setting. This paper focuses on one aspect of the findings, the ways in which the early childhood portfolios could be used to enhance children’s learning during the transition to school. Portfolios were identified as a belonging and empowerment tool; a means for school teachers to access to children’s funds of knowledge; playing a role in constructing a positive self-image about learning; and as valuable literacy artefacts

    Two hundred sixty-four unreversed oblique reflection-refraction profiles using expendable radio-sonobuoys were obtained during two geophysical cruises to the Atlantic continental margin of Africa.     Heat shock proteins (Hsps) have attracted significant attention as protective antigens against a range of diseases caused by bacterial pathogens. However, more recently there have been suggestions that the protective response is due to the presence of peptide components other than Hsps. We have shown that mice that had been immunized with purified heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) isolated from Francisella tularensis were protected against a subsequent challenge with some strains of the bacterium. However, this protection appeared to be due to trace amounts of lipopolysaccharide, which were too low to be detected by using the Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay. This finding raises the possibility that the protection afforded by other bacterial Hsp60 proteins may be due to trace quantities of polysaccharide antigens carried by and acting in conjunction with the Hsps

    Understanding older adults’ perceptions of and attitudes towards exergames

    Purpose Maintaining physical activity is a key component of successful aging and has benefits for both physical and cognitive functioning in the older adult population. One promising method for engaging in physical activity is through exergames, which are video games designed to promote exercise. Exergames have the potential to be used by a wide range of people, including older adults, in a variety of settings, such as at home, in community living environments, or senior centers. However, exergames have not been designed for older adults (e.g., with respect to their attitudes, needs). Thus, older adults may not adopt these systems if they perceive them as not useful or relevant to them. Method Twenty older adults (aged 60-79) interacted with two exergames, and were then interviewed about their perceptions of the system’s ease of use and usefulness, as well as their general attitudes towards the system. Results Participants identified the potential for exergames’ usefulness for various goals, such as to increase their physical activity. However, they also reported negative attitudes concerning the system, including perceiving barriers to system use. Overall, participants said they would use the system in the future and recommend it to other people at their age for improving health, despite these use challenges. Conclusion The older adults were open to adopting exergames, which could provide opportunities to increase physical activity. Given the participants’ overall positive perceptions of the usefulness of exergames, designers must address the perceived challenges of using these systems. Understanding barriers and facilitators for older adults’ use of exergames can guide design, training, and adoption of these systems

    Identity and belonging in social learning groups : the importance of distinguishing social, operational and knowledge-related identity congruence

    Collaborative learning has much to offer but not all learners participate fully and peer groups can be exclusive. The paper examines how belonging or 'congruence' in learning groups is related to identities of gender, age, ethnicity and socio-economic status. A study of student experiences of collaborative learning on three different blended learning courses illustrated how learners negotiate identity congruence with peer groups to belong and engage. An analytical framework that distinguishes social, operational and knowledge-related identity congruence has emerged. Contrary to received wisdom, the social aspect appears least important for learner engagement while knowledge-related identity congruence is fundamental. Some of the consequences of identity incongruence, particularly concerning gender and maturity, are discussed and the paper points towards the pedagogies which might enable identities of group members to shift so that collaborative learning can flourish

    A Catalogue of Optically Selected Cores

    We present a new catalogue of 406 dense cores optically selected by using the STScI Digitized Sky Survey (DSS). In this catalogue 306 cores have neither an Embedded YSO (EYSO) nor a Pre-Main-Sequence (PMS) star, 94 cores have EYSOs (1 core has both an EYSO and a PMS star), and 6 cores have PMS star only. Our sample of dense cores in the catalogue is fairly complete within a category of northern Lynds class 5, 6 clouds, and southern Hartley et al. (1986)'s class A clouds, providing a database useful for the systematic study of dense cores. Most of the cores listed in the catalogue have diameters between 0.05−0.360.05 - 0.36 pc with a mean of ∌0.24\sim 0.24 pc. The sizes (∌0.33\sim 0.33 pc in the mean) of cores with EYSOs are found to be usually larger than the sizes (∌0.22\sim 0.22 pc in the mean) of starless cores. The typical mean gas density of the cores is ∌7×103cm−3\sim7\times 10^3 cm^{-3}. Most of the cores are more likely elongated than spherical (mean aspect ratio: ∌2.4\sim 2.4). The ratio of the number of cores with EYSOs to the number of starless cores for our sample is about 0.3, suggesting that the typical lifetime of starless cores is 0.3−1.60.3-1.6 Myr, about 3 times longer than the duration of the Class 0 and Class I phases. This lifetime is shorter than expected from models of ambipolar diffusion, by factors of 2-44.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, and to appear in ApJS.     HIV associated Lymphocytic Interstitial Pneumonia: a clinical, histological and radiographic study from an HIV endemic resource-poor setting

    Background: There is a paucity of clinical and histopathological data about HIV-associated lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis (LIP) in adults from HIV endemic settings. The role of Ebstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the pathogenesis remains unclear. Methods: We reviewed the clinical, radiographic and histopathological features of suspected adult LIP cases at the Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town South Africa, over a 6 year period. Archived tissue sections were stained for CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20 and LMP-1 antigen (an EBV marker). Results: 42 cases of suspected LIP(100% HIV-infected) were identified. 75% of patients were empirically treated for TB prior to being referred to the chest service for further investigation. Tissue samples were obtained using trans-bronchial biopsy. 13/42 were classified as definite LIP (lymphocytic infiltrate with no alternative diagnosis), 19/42 probable LIP (lymphocytic infiltrate but evidence of anthracosis or fibrosis) and 10 as non-LIP (alternative histological diagnosis). Those with definite LIP were predominantly young females (85%) with a median CD4 count of 194 (IQR 119–359). Clinical or radiological features had poor predictive value for LIP. Histologically, the lymphocytic infiltrate comprised mainly B cells and CD8 T cells. The frequency of positive EBV LMP-1 antigen staining was similar in definite and non- LIP patients [(2/13 (15%) vs. 3/10 (30%); p = 0.52]. Conclusions: In a HIV endemic setting adult HIV-associated LIP occurs predominantly in young women. The diagnosis can often be made on transbronchial biopsy and is characterized by a predominant CD8 T cell infiltrate. No association with EBV antigen was found

    Blum’s speedup theorem is a major theorem in computational com-plexity, showing the existence of computable functions for which no optimal program can exist: for any speedup function r there ex-ists a function fr such that for any program computing fr we can find an alternative program computing it with the desired speedup r. The main corollary is that algorithmic problems do not have, in general, a inherent complexity. Traditional proofs of the speedup theorem make an essential use of Kleene’s fix point theorem to close a suitable diagonal argument. As a consequence, very little is known about its validity in subrecursive settings, where there is no universal machine, and no fixpoints.     Lecturers' use of Web 2.0 in the faculty of Information Science and communications at MZUZU University, Malawi

    The study reported on in this article investigated the use of Web 2.0 technologies by lecturers in the Faculty of Information Science and Communications at Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Mzuzu, Malawi. By distributing a questionnaire to 19 lecturers, conducting follow-up interviews with seven lecturers and analysing the curricula, the study showed that between 10 (58.8%) and 13 (76.5%) lecturers use Wikipedia, YouTube, blogs, Google Apps and Twitter to accomplish various academic activities, such as handing out assignments to students; receiving feedback from students; uploading lecture notes; searching for content; storing lecture notes; and carrying out collaborative educational activities. The study adopted the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour (Taylor and Todd 1995) and the theory's elements that strongly affected lecturers' use of the technologies according to the results included attitude and perceived behaviour control. The study also found that poor Internet access remains the key stumbling block towards a successful adoption of Web 2.0 technologies by lecturers at MZUNI. To this end, the study recommends that the newly established Department of ICT Directorate with support from MZUNI management should install campuswide Wi-Fi and improve Internet bandwidth so that lecturers' access to the Internet is not limited to their offices but rather is available in the teaching rooms across the campus.DHE
